June 21, 2015
Last night may or may not have been a rough night. Fun, but rough. Let's just say that some of us woke up at 7am, took a drunk shower and went back to sleep. Others slept with various items placed all over them, including, but not limited to a hat, brush, various granola bars, a travel guide... And others stayed in bed until the last possible minute before we had to leave. I'm totally not naming any names here, because none of us are running on a full tank right now.
Some bureks helped to ease the pain a bit as we packed up and left our cozy little apartment. We still had plenty of time left in the day before we needed to drive to Sarajevo, so we headed through the island of Trogir to Okrug Gornji (don't ask me to pronounce that) until we found another beach to frolic on today. Yesterday the water was somewhat murky and filled with seaweed. Today the shoreline was comprised of little rocks, and the water was as clear and blue as the sky. Simply breathtaking.
It was also damn cold. I was surprised with just how cold it was being near the end of June, but I suppose that just has to do with the ocean temps? No clue, but I didn't spend a lot of time in the actual water. Only enough time to cool off from the heat of the sun.

Simply beautiful. |
Can I stay right here? |
The three of us all went out to cool off together, but didn't make it much further in since it was so cold. We even all struck the same pose without realizing it at first. I'm glad Brenda caught our ridiculousness. |
We spent a decent 2.5 hours here with some final beachy relaxation before we drove back to Trogir to explore the walled city. It's a tiny island between the mainland of Croatia and the island of Ciovo that we just came from. Trogir is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating from the 3rd century BC. The city itself was beautiful, boasting numerous Greek, Roman and Venetian influences. This ancient feel is what I love the most about my trips to Europe. I just loved the architecture and the worn stones (unless it's raining and you're wearing $2 flip flops). I always try to imagine the people who've walked these same streets over the centuries.
I don't think we could have asked for a better day to explore. |
The stones are uneven and worn from thousands of years of use. And they will try to kill you. |
I wonder what is behind that door that is for sale... |
Underside of the pavilion we were in. |
Ancient door to the city. |
Yes. Those are exactly what they look like. Wooden penis shaped bottles openers. We found peep shaped items EVERYWHERE! |
What the?! |
Being a Sunday, it was much less crowded than we thought it would be. Maybe everyone else had too fun of a night before as well. :) We found a patio restaurant nestled off one of the sidewalks, and I had a giant pizza and caprese salad to fuel any lingering hangover effects. Sadly, it was time to leave Croatia, but I was so excited to finally see where Brenda has spent the last year of her life.

I thought Fanta was orange? |
Yum. |
Double yum. |
Super narrow "streets". |
Really sad to leave this view. |
It was 5 hour drive back to Sarajevo, which wasn't bad through the Croatian part. They have the economy and government to back their roads, but Bosnia isn't so fortunate. There are zero highways in Bosnia. Scratch that, there is one highway, but it's not completed, so no one can actually drive on it. This made for some windy and steep two-lane roads that were less than ideal to travel on. Brenda is such a pro though, and she managed to get us "home" in one piece.

Very confused. It says Porshe, but has a Volkswagen logo. |
Border patrol! |
Well, hello Bosnia. |
B mentioned that it looked a bit like Jurassic Park as we were traveling through, and she was right. |
To keep us entertained, B talked to us about BiH history, told us about the Neretva River, and pointed out their police offers which she called the lollipop men. They would station themselves along the roads, and if they waved a sign at you (some kind of circle on a stick that looked like a lollipop), that let you know that you were to pull over. Luckily, no lollipop men today!
Quote of the day: "Lady Garden/Lerdy Gerden"
Favorite parts of Croatia: The relaxing vibe, and the clear waters of the beach today. Oh, and our apartment. It was amazing!
Least favorite parts of Croatia: Nothing really. Oh, except maybe those stupid fish bones.
